David RoyerNice post & I agree that having thoughtful rationale for each design decision is an important part of being a competent designer.

I am curious - does anyone document the rationale for their design decisions as they make them?  How has that worked out? One problem I occasionally run in to is forgetting the rationale of small decisions I have made in previous products.

For context, we have sales people who get questions from customers about design decisions in our products. I can provide reasons for all the choices if I recently designed the product, but after a year has passed and I've dived in to another product I often forget the exact reason for some small design decisions.
